Tell the Media: The Jan. 27th Demonstration Speaks for Me

Did he say anything new about Iraq?
Last night George W. Bush delivered the annual State of the Union address. Others will offer analysis on different aspects of the speech, but we just want to take a moment to say something about his comments related to the ongoing war and occupation in Iraq.
What Bush said about Iraq can be simply summed up this way: It's all about staying the course. Does his much trumpeted new approach in Iraq add up to anything other than stay the course? His speech last night certainly only gave us more of what we've heard for 4 long years. He has no need ideas! And if Bush is allowed to pursue his policy of endless war there will only be more senseless death and destruction in Iraq. It must end, now.
And we were troubled by the Democratic Party response. They did not offer an alternative, a plan for ending the war and bringing all the troops home.
Both the president's speech and the Democrats' response are stark reminders of how critical the work of our movement is. And this weekend's national march on Washington, DC, is a critical time to raise our voices! It's not too late to make your plans to get to DC. If you can't make it to Washington, then we urge you to get to one of the more than 75 other protests being organized around the country.
Now is also the time to get our message into the media. This work is making a difference: We heard from a woman who's coming to Saturday's mobilization in Washington because she saw a letter to the editor another individual in her community had written to her local paper. Here's what you can do:
1) Send a letter to the editor today and explain why you disagree with the President's war in Iraq and why you're joining the protest this weekend. If you can't make it to Washington, state why Saturday's march speaks for you.
2) Call radio talk shows to discuss the issues and mention the Washington march, or a demonstration in or near your town.
3) Contact media outlets in your town to encourage them to cover the massive demonstration in Washington on Saturday.
Be sure to check the United for Peace and Justice website for details about Saturday's demonstration and other ways you can be involved.
