Want to End the War Right Now? Subpoena Cheney
By Esbe
Dick Cheney is no ordinary liar. His mendacity is pathological, criminal. His record of lies is nearly endless, but more important than the lies, are his deliberate subversions of the Presidency itself through the creation of agencies designed to circumvent the relationship between the intelligence services and the President, and actual acts of treason which were long believed to have taken place by reasonable people, and which are now being confirmed in the Libby trial.
Senate resolutions condemning Bush's escalation are not only ineffectual, but wasting precious time as a rogue administration has its finger on the button and is by all evidence willing to plunge America into another world war to insulate itself from prosecution. There is a way to end this administration's abuse of power very quickly, and it needs to be done immediately; Subpoena Cheney to appear and answer questions, beginning with his role in the outing of Valerie Plame.
Cheney will undoubtedly refuse to appear, claiming he "can't talk about it". My ASS he can't talk about it when he's served with a Subpoena by congress ordering him to answer their questions. Fact: There is NO GAG ORDER ON CHENEY IN THIS CASE. Only his own attempt to cover his ass through his attorney. Cheney CAN talk about it, he just won't. He can be forced to choose between talking about it, or immediate removal from office by a Democratic congress and more than enough fed-up Republicans.
Just as Cheney already choose contempt of congress once by refusing to turn over the minutes of the August 2001 energy task force meeting, he will certainly extend his middle finger to congress again. Good! Because this is NOT August of 2001. Contempt of congress today, is impeachable as a political reality. Cheney's almost certain choice to sit in contempt, can be the trigger for immediate impeachment proceedings, followed by a Subpoena served upon George W. Bush as a co-conspirator. And if by a million to one chance, Cheney did choose to appear to answer questions under oath, who doesn't know that it's all going to be over for him on the first day?
Do the dems really want to end this thing? If they do, they have a tool: they can issue the Subpoena to Cheney to appear and then they will have all the political cover they need to successfully impeach both Bush and Cheney. Nancy Pelosi would then be sworn in as President.
If you really think this is far fetched, consider the bind Republicans will be put in when Cheney acts in contempt of congress. There is no arguing his immediate removal for this, nor would there be when Bush attempted the same evasion; The majority of the GOP understand now, that the administration has gone completely off the deep end, and in Bush's effort to stave off the inevitable for personal political purposes, the GOP will throw this administration under the bus to save what's left of it when the final confrontation is manifested.
Do you really believe the GOP will not agree to impeachment, or demand Bush's resignation should Cheney choose contempt of congress when served? The only meaningful question here is this: Do the dems have the guts to do what must be done to save the country? Of that I remain highly skeptical.
