Support for Bush slips in home state
Continuing U.S. war casualties in Iraq have caused President Bush's approval rating to plummet in his home state, but a solid majority of Texans still believe that the conflict was necessary, according to a new poll.
In a random survey of 1,000 Texans, taken between Nov. 14 and Dec. 6, 51 percent said they approved of the way Bush was handling the war in Iraq, down from 78 percent in the spring, the Texas Poll said.
Twenty-four percent of the respondents said Bush was doing an "excellent" job in the Iraq war; 50 percent believed that to be the true in the spring.
Nineteen percent of the poll's participants said Bush's performance in handling the war was "fair," while 27 percent gave him a "poor" grade.
Although Texans appear to be wary of America's progress in the war, 60 percent of those contacted by the Texas Poll said they still believe that "the situation in Iraq was worth going to war over;" 33 percent said they disagreed.
The poll, conducted by the Scripps Research Center, had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points
