Newsweek Article.. Internet big brother..

A Net of Control
Unthinkable: How the Internet could become a tool of corporate and government power, based on updates now in the works

Christoph Niemann for Newsweek
By Steven Levy

Newsweek InternationalIssues 2004 - Picture, if you will, an information infrastructure that encourages censorship, surveillance and suppression of the creative impulse. Where anonymity is outlawed and every penny spent is accounted for. Where the powers that be can smother subversive (or economically competitive) ideas in the cradle, and no one can publish even a laundry list without the imprimatur of Big Brother. Some prognosticators are saying that such a construct is nearly inevitable. And this infrastructure is none other than the former paradise of rebels and free-speechers: the Internet.

To those exposed to the Panglossian euphoria of Net enthusiasts during the 1990s, this vision seems unbelievable. After all, wasn’t the Internet supposed to be the defining example of empowering technology? Freedom was allegedly built into the very bones of the Internet, designed to withstand nuclear blasts and dictatorial attempts at control. While this cyberslack has its downside—porn, credit-card fraud and insincere bids on eBay—it was considered a small price to pay for free speech and friction-free business models. The freedom genie was out, and no one could put it back into the bottle.

1. This is one more reason why Bill Gates ranks with George W. Bush
as one of the biggest SOB's on the planet. We can do our part by fighting Microsoft every step of the way. Looking for a new computer? Try Apple/Mac or Linux instead of Microshaft. Forget Microshaft's inferior Internet Explorer browser; Mozilla and Firebird are just two examples of competitors that are far superior.

And tell Gates to get his stinking carcarss out of OUR schools!

2. Well folks....
Its obvious that this is bound to become a reality. The Internet is
really the last remaining bastion of freedom of speech, information
and thought... They NEED to remove this obstacle in order to
completely control us once and for all.

Seriously, I don't think that we would be as "educated" about what
yhas transpired during these past 20 months, i.e., with regards to
9/11, the Bushistas, etc if it would not have been for the Internet.

Folks...the Internet IS the underground. The media is controlled
and we can no longer rely on them. Imagine if you had no DU and
had to completely rely on CNN/FOX/MSNBC etc? Get my drift?

How would you know that other Americans thought like you? How would
we organize protests? How would we learn the truth?

Again...they need to and will remove the Internet....

6. an excellent article,
but you should edit your post to cut out some of the article. In general about 4 paragraphs or so should be posted here (for copyright purposes) with a link to the actual article which you've already got...

7. Wireless Connections and "Operation Dark Star?" Is that our hope?
sitting in caves creating web sites and blogs for our fellow "undergrounders?"

I'm a computer clueless, but I want to be there when the "Supreme Hackers" find a way for us in "the underground" to connect. With all the bright minds out there, I think it can be done. Asscroft/Bush doesn't have enough "Brown Shirt" brain power to overwhelm the "Nerds" out there.

It's my hope at least.
