A. Alexander, March 1st, 2007
For decades, since the end of the Vietnam War, the Republican Party has pitched itself as being "strong on national defense," champions of America's "troops," and more recently the Bush administration and Republicans have insisted that they were the only people that could keep America safe from the "evil-doing" terrorists. In the end, however, it is all a rouse designed to swindle votes from patriotic Americans. For the Republican Party, especially the radicalized and extremist version of today's GOP, the only things that truly matter are greed and their stygian and failed ideology.
Does a Party and President that truly honors national defense and the "troops," lie the country into a war? Of course not! But the current administration and Republicans did swindle the American people into supporting an unjustifiable war, so that Mister Bush and Cheney could implement their precious Neoconservative ideology of global domination. Also, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, with the help of a compliant Republican Congress; lied the nation to war so that they could control Iraq's oil and, too, so that their war-based corporate pals -- think Halliburton et al -- could literally steal billions upon billions of dollars from the government's coffers.
All the above is a perfect example of extremist Republican Party greed and ideology completely overwhelming the needs of national security. After all, every intelligence analysis has shown that the Iraq War has created more terrorists than ever before and caused the near total destruction of the United States military's capability to respond to real national security threats.
Still, today's Republicans -- especially the Bush administration -- love to wrap themselves in the flags formerly draped over the coffins of America's military. Surely then they love, honor and support those "troops," right? Well, actually, not so much.
The Democrats are considering legislation that would require all "troops" being sent into combat in Iraq, to have been through the necessary training and too, that they be outfitted with the proper equipment and body armor. The Republicans, however, disagree vehemently and threaten to do all they can to prevent such a bill from moving forward. Why would the supposedly "troop" loving and supporting GOP do such a thing?
The answer is simple: their ideology won't allow them to defy their President's will. George W. Bush wants to escalate the Iraq War and Congressional Republicans --knowing too, that the so-called 'surge' plan is opposed by most Generals and experts -- won't allow anything, including the welfare of the "troops," to stand in the way of their Dear Leader getting what he wishes.
Regardless of all the above, Republicans would never put ideology over national defense, right? They would never, ever dream of doing anything that would put American citizens at risk of being attacked by terrorists, right? Think again!
