Blogtalk: The Verdict

A line of intrigue that began with an op-ed in 2003 came to an end today when I. Lewis “Scooter Libby” was found guilty on four of five charges brought against him in what became known as the Valerie Plame Affair. The blogs saw the trial as more about Vice President Dick Cheney than about Mr. Libby, Mr. Cheney’s former chief of staff.
Andrew Sullivan at Daily Dish, the blog for The Atlantic, said that the convictions raised many questions about the vice president, questions Mr. Cheney “will now have to answer …either before the press or before the Senate.”
Writing under the headline, “Will Cheney Resign?”, Mr. Sullivan, who, while a conservative, has often criticized the war in Iraq and Mr. Cheney himself, also said talk of a presidential pardon for Mr. Libby might not be the best move forward for the Bush administration.
“Purely from a political standpoint, such a pardon would surely ignite a massive protest, turn this story into a much bigger one, and make many more Americans curious about why their own vice-president was more interested in tackling a domestic critic in the summer of 2003 than fighting the Iraq insurgency. The risk in not pardoning Libby, of course, is that he may begin to talk.”
But later in the day, Mr. Sullivan went further.
“We now need a Congressional investigation to find out more, to subpoena Cheney and, if he won’t cooperate, consider impeaching him.”
