Experts to Analyze Oil Prospecting in Gulf of Mexico
This month Havana will host the second Earth Sciences Convention, Geosciences 2007. The gathering is especially interesting for Cuba, because along with it will be the first congress on oil and gas. Experts see it as an opportunity to analyze exploration and production of the so-called, ¨black gold¨ in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
The scientific gathering will also deal with the production of heavy, sulfur-laden oil in reserves with carbonized reservoirs, the treatment, transport and refining of heavy crude, the challenges of horizontal perforation technology and use of accompanying gas.
All of these are topics of great interest to Cuban specialists who are dealing with development programs based on prospecting and extracting petroleum.
Cuba possesses an Exclusive Economic Zone in the Gulf of Mexico extending 112 square kilometers, in which there are great perspectives for finding oil and gas.
In l977, the governments of Cuba and the United States agreed on the maritime border between them and shortly thereafter, Havana did the same with Mexico.
