Nurse’s blog stirs dad against war in Iraq

LAKE IN THE HILLS – The title of Desert Flier’s blog is a warning to the squeamish: “Life and death in the Anbar Province thru the eyes of a trauma nurse.”

The posts pull no punches.

“Multiple penetrating trauma to his abdomen with fragments blown out his back .... legs flopping around from shattered femurs. His left hand? Nothing left.”

The patient of Navy Lt. Carl Goforth died the next day after being flown to a hospital – despite receiving 46 units of blood and two doses of drugs.

Goforth, 37, a nurse attached to a Marine Unit in Al Asad, Iraq, was deployed Jan. 19 and he has been blogging about his experiences. Carroll Goforth, 56, of Lake in the Hills, follows his son’s writings from home. Although proud of him and frightened for him, Carroll Goforth supported the war effort – until recently when one of his son’s posts changed his mind. With Tuesday marking the fourth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, he now wants others to read the blog so they can get a clear picture of what is going on there.

Carroll Goforth said neither he nor his son view his stand as not supporting the troops.

“I can easily support my son’s effort and lend support to his morale,” Carroll Goforth said. “On the other hand, I do not have to support the war.”

1. Don't know that I can bear to read that blog, but I honor this father for spreading the word about

his son's experiences as a nurse in Iraq. I don't know how people make it over there.

2. Florence Nightengale was a combat nurse

Heros, every one. One of the most powerful books I've ever read was "Home Before Morning: The Story of an Army Nurse in Vietnam." by Lynda Van Devanter. She became a founder of Vietnam Veterans of America and an incredible activist for veterans. At her recent funeral she had 21 doves released instead of a 21 gun salute as she requested. She had enough of gunfire during her life.
