Political intervention in prosecutors' duties is a bad mixture, Keating says

WASHINGTON -- Former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating said politics was never considered in removing U.S. attorneys when he was associate attorney general in the Reagan administration.

Weighing in on the latest political firestorm to hit the Bush administration, Keating, a Republican, de scribed as "reckless" an apparent plan laid out in recently released e-mails to circumvent U.S. senators in appointing new U.S. attorneys.

"That was outrageous," he said Friday.

Keating said he also was troubled by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' statements that he did not know what was going on when a number of U.S. attorneys were removed.
