Who is to blame for destroying the "institution" of marriage?
<http://desmoinesregister.com/opinion/stories/c5917686/23183143.html>

Interesting take on the issue of gay marriage and Brittany Spears. Also debunks some of the "family values" arguments against gays and lesbians.

2. Bah
Given that half of all marriages fail, I think the "institution" was destroyed long ago.

3. Fast Food Culture....

The "I want it now!" mentality Republicans love so much is what ended the institution.

I should know, my parents have been married five times a piece, and my grandparents were each married for 50+ years. It's just too easy to get a divorce now, and people have too many options.

Back in the day, you lived in your little town and you rarely left. People hardly ever met any other likely suitors. These days, you hop on a plane across America. You go on dates...

Gays and Lesbians have NOTHING to do with the institution of marriage failing.

7. marriage and adultery and the Bible
I took a long car trip and listened to audiotapes of the New Testament. Interesting to hear all the direct statements against divorce and adultery and fornication and the paucity of statements that could possibly be construed as against homosexuality.

This drive against gay marriage is a part of a coverup (in plain sight) of the massive amount of fornicating, adultery, and divorce among people passing themselves off as "traditional" christians.

(Fornication is such a great word----sounds absolutely hideous).

5. Greed destroyed marriage as we know it
Neither two-income families, divorce, or single parents destroyed the "institution" of marriage; it's greed, pure and simple. The aforementioned is the result, not the cause, of the destruction of so many marriages. Gays are a separate story altogether.

Greed forced both parents to work full time for paltry wages, sometimes at two jobs, to make ends meet, leaving spouses with stress, fights over money, and no time for each other, let alone the kids. The spouses drift apart, fight all the time, and eventually divorce, leaving one parent as a single parent.

8. This has been stewing for decades...
It took on epic proportions when the "Me Generation" got genetically seeded during the Reagan years. Cut off roots and submerge in a sauce of corporate controlled media message. Increase heat, season with hatred and bring to a boil.

Thanx Brittany, for setting the LIE out there, front and center. Thanx, Fed2neck for stating the obvious so clearly.

9. It's all RayGun's fault!
But then, what isn't?

R. RayGun made greed socially acceptable. No link, but I was there and he did. Lots of Greedies relabeled themselves as Conservatives - painless, since the two groups' agendas overlap so much.

I now see that he also seriously weakened the institution of marriage (Omigod, I'm in a institution!), by being the first divorced and remarried POTUS.

RR was a one-man axis of evil!

10. Welcome to DU.
And thank you for posting such a wonderful article.

For the first time EVER, in my two plus years of being a member of DU, I actually felt like the tide had really begun turning in favor of gay marriage, just by reading a thread which was started by a disruptor a few days back. (See: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=986705)

This thread showed me that the tide is indeed turning, and many people here at DU, who I had all but given up on have finally been listening to what us queers had been saying, and they were actually learning tolerance and understading.

This article proves to me that the tide is turning in the nation as well.
