1. the rebellion was in part do to religion
there were rumors started among the East Indian troops that the British were trying to force them to become Christians and as part of that the British introduced a new type of rifle cartridge where the end had to be bitten off, among the Muslim troops it was said that the end of the cartridge had been dipped in pork fat and among the Hindu troops that it had been dipped in beef tallow, there by making the troops "unclean" and leaving them no choice but to become Christians.
