Choices have narrowed for Maine's Democrats

A couple of months ago, when former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean was enjoying frontrunner status in the Democratic race for president, it was easy to say he didn't deserve the title. After all, not a single vote had been cast.

Things are very different today. Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry has earned his position as the leader in this field of talented Democrats with a string of impressive wins. On Tuesday, he won five of seven states holding primaries or caucuses. With earlier victories in Iowa and New Hampshire, Kerry has positioned himself as a strong favorite to win the nomination.

The contest is not over, however, and Maine will be playing a role in the selection of a nominee on Sunday. Caucuses here will be held before Kerry or any other candidate has a chance to lock up the nomination.

As a practical matter, however, Mainers' choices are narrowing.
