HOW did we all miss THIS? (Or did we? Neuharth editorial in USA Today)
Edited on Fri Feb-06-04 04:23 PM by Brotherjohn
I didn't see any posts on it. Perhaps it was because, like me, most progressives have begun to ignore USA Today, and especially founder Al Neuharth's "editorials", which are typically watered down positions catering to popular opinion.

Yesterday, he laid the blame for the entire WMD thing at Bush's feet.

"What Bush needs to understand: Nearly all of us think Iraq is better off without Saddam in power. But most are beginning to wonder whether it was worth the mounting price in lives and monumental dollars. And now many think the pre-war WMD scare was stupid or trumped up or both."

He gives Bush an "F" report card on the issue, including the fact that we have initiated a war on information that is now known to be wrong. He says we should deal with it just as we would with our children, and ends with:
"First, accept blame. Second, apologize. Third, get back on track. If that doesn't work, it's out to the woodshed. In this case, Bush has one he could retreat to in Crawford, Texas."

For better or worse (in this case, better), a LOT of people read USA Today.

12. Fault
The Neo Fascists cannot accept fault because as in court cases that would leave them liable for criminal procecution. If the justification for the invasion of a sovereign country was WMDs and none are there, a case can be made by the injured parties for criminal violation and restitution. Merely saying a mistake was made and that it was the fault of others won't absolve the perps. It doesn't matter if now the reasons for the attack are being changed. Also, the fact that troops are still there causing death and injury is a violation of Iraq's sovereignty.

13. Anthrax attacks
Remember, they were the recipients of the anthrax attacks, along with our Democratic house and senate leaders.....makes some step in step! I think they were all so frightened, that they just caved in until this election cycle. Now a few are stepping forward. Maybe they have seen enough, that they just can not remain quiet! I know, I was surprised that Peter Jennings uttered those four little letters, AWOL....I think that may have been the shot across the bow!

One can Hope!

4. I don't know. As I said, he typically caters to popular opinion.
Could it be that this position is now becoming popular opinion?

If so, there's not much Bush can do about it.

9. Accept the blame and apologize and get back on the neocon track:
so what if tens of thousands are dead, maimed, left homeless, jobless, starving at a cost of several hundred billion, so what if all this were based on lies, deceptions, and half-truth, and dissing the UN, most of our staunchest allies, and most of the rest of the world. So what is this were execution of a long-established PNAC agenca. So what if such actions were in violation of our Constitution and the UN charter. So what. I did it and I'm sorry, now everything is o.k.

14. I think that the reason why...
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 11:37 AM by Politicub
we didn't notice this, is that the WMD farce message is gloriously all over the media -- including on repug lapdog Fox news.

Perhaps the lies of Bush are so big, so heinous, so repulsive to the majority of Americans, that the house of cards is finally tumbling down. Witness how long the AWOL story took to grow legs.
