Butler County Auditor Kay Rogers pleads guilty in Dynus scandal

Butler County (Ohio) Auditor Kay Rogers (a Republican, duh) could face up to 33 years in prison following her guilty plea today to federal charges related the Dynus Technologies scandal. According to the U.S. Attorney's office, Rogers pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return and conspiring to commit bank and mail fraud.

The criminal charges stem from an FBI investigation into a 2005 contract between Butler County and the Bond Hill technology firm that was hired to market a high-speed fiber optic network on the county's behalf.

In a six-page indictment made public Monday, prosecutors allege Rogers assisted in making false representations to National City Bank and failed to disclose $56,000 in income she received over a five-year period from a company identified in court records only as DC.

"Relying in part on her false representations, National City paid the company $4 million on Dec. 31, 2004," said a press release from Gregory Lockhart, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. "Rogers also signed various documents that purported to commit Butler County to making various obligations. In signing those documents, Rogers knew she exceeded her authority as the county auditor. Others used the documents to help induce payments from National City."
