"...Mr. Bush...forcefully defended the union of a man and a woman as "the most fundamental institution of civilization," but...(w)hen (he) finished...he abruptly turned on his heel and strode from the room, ignoring all questions...Mr. Bush was acting under enormous pressure from his evangelical Christian supporters...His more moderate supporters...worried that he might look like a gay basher."What? Mr. Moral Courage, who clung to his resolve to attack Iraq in the face of a world of opposition and no evidence to speak of, couldn't tell a bunch of overpriced Jesus freaks that Congress would make no law establishing a religion as long as he was in charge?
"Mr. Bush's friends say that is hardly the case and that the president is quite comfortable with gays. Laura Bush, when asked in a recent interview by The New York Times if she and her husband had gay friends, easily replied: 'Sure, of course. Everyone does.'"And that's fine with them as long as they don't try to make their commitment permanent and real. The article goes on to cover Bush's gay political appointments and an encounter with transgendered ex-classmate. And in the interest of being fair and balanced, it's pointed out that Kerry doesn't like gay marriage, either.
Too bad there wasn't a followup question for Laura about she planned to explain the marriage ban to those gay friends of hers!
