4. I'm still not sure what's involved.

But I don't recall that from before I upgraded this machine to Xp (US version). I set my browser to Japanese when I check Japanese websites, but that's only unencoding 2-byte characters rather than translating them. Otherwise, it's "Western European". The original of that page came up in what appeared to be glitch-free German.

Anyway, some parts of the "translation" are really funny; example: "Many Germans verscherbelten their bodies to the neighbouring soldiers"

"Verscherbeln" is a dismissive word for "to sell". The original text says "Many Germans sell their decrepit cars to the neigbouring soldiers."


Still: the general meaning comes across.

5. I DO have a Google tool bar.

I was warned that it's primed with spyware, but I use it very frequently for web-searches. When I do that, I see the option: "Translate this page". The results are generally as clunky (and comical) as the above. But this is part of a lengthy right-click pop-up window, which I assume is from the Kingdom of Bill Gates.

6. it's not that bad

It provides the "translate option" and comes in two versions: with spyware and without (no advanced features). The only major security problem is the auto-update feature.
