What would Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity say about McCain and Palin if they were Democrats?
by John F. Borowski | October 6, 2008

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."
–John McCain: speaking to a Republican dinner, June 1998.

Ann Coulter is famous for attacking the patriotic service of Democratic candidates. Her caustic and inhumane attacks on Max Cleland are well documented. "Cleland ... didn't 'give his limbs for his country,' or leave them 'on the battlefield.' There was no bravery involved in dropping a grenade on himself with no enemy troops in sight." How could anyone say that about a triple amputee who bravely fought for his country? If McCain were a Democrat, would Coulter speak of his crashing four jets as a Navy pilot, including being shot down over Vietnam? Would she condemn McCain for his repeated use of the word "gook?" Would she question the mere twenty or so hours of combat time which led one McCain critic to suggest that McCain's 28 medals equal about one and half medals for each hour in combat? In light of her past, Ann Coulter probably would use these facts against McCain: if he were a Democrat.

Sean Hannity, self appointed guru of morality and human frailties has the same appalling track-record as Coulter when it comes to viciousness, self righteousness and ultimate hypocrisy. Hannity broadcasting from outside Terri Schiavo's hospice building, gave new meaning to "ghoulish reporting." When John Edwards admitted his affair, Hannity was quick to pounce. "I'm not getting this. Explain to me and I'm wondering if you can't keep the promise to your family, can't keep your promise to your wife, you're having an affair, you're lying about the affair repeatedly, why should the American people trust you when you say you're not going to lie to them? Why should we trust you?" If John McCain was a Democrat would Hannity speak of McCain's womanizing? McCain returned to America in 1973 a hero, but does a hero abandon his wife disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier? One arm and her pelvis were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries. Her vigilance and apparent love kept her waiting for her imprisoned husband. Her reward, John McCain, traded in his once beautiful wife, now disfigured and physically shorter due to operations, for a young, rich babe in her 20s. In Hannity's world, McCain would be an adulterer, a selfish and heartless man who chased his current wife, Cindy, before the ink on the divorce papers was even dry. In light of his past, Sean Hannity, probably would use these facts against McCain: if he were a Democrat.

Rush Limbaugh, possibly the most crude and insensitive of the valued spokespeople of the Republican sleaze machine, makes a habit of caustic slurs. From calling Barack Obama, a "half African" to telling a black caller to "take the bone out of your nose" to mocking Michael J. Fox's bout with a deadly disease: there are not many talk show hosts that demonstrate such incredible disregard for honor and integrity or even mere civility. Yet, imagine if Barack Obama had made a joke about President Bush's daughter? Imagine if Obama stated the "reason why Jenna Bush is so ugly, is because Janet Reno is her father." Limbaugh would be calling for his immediate resignation as US senator. If John McCain was a Democrat, Limbaugh would lambaste him on his flip-flops on the religious right: from "agents of intolerance" to courting them with his choice of the "I can see Russia" Palin as his running mate. Limbaugh would make comment after comment about McCain's persistent use of vulgar language to savage opponents and McCain's despicable use of the "c word" in reference to his wife Cindy. Yes, in light of his past, Rush Limbaugh would use these facts against McCain: if he were a Democrat.

* * *

Yes, if McCain were a Democrat, the right wing attack machine would be talking about his several houses and elitist lifestyle. What would they say about taking checks from "Hollywood elites" ranging from James Caan to Robert Duvall? From Limbaugh to Hannity to O'Reilly the "fair and balanced" crew would be showing film clips of Governor Palin's pastor attack on Jews for not accepting Jesus Christ as their savior or Palin herself claiming that the war in Iraq is "God's will." They would illuminate the Keating five debacle as part of more taxpayers bailing out scumbags and the connections with "dirty money" McCain so openly decries? How about the big financial interests still funding McCain? (And among his major fundraisers 59 ("bundlers") have been identified as lobbyists by the non-profit organization Public Citizen.) The Republicans prefer lies, yet, with McCain's history filled with documented issues: the Republican smear machines could have a field day with McCain's enormous graveyard of skeletons in his closet. And flip-flops? From off shore drilling to the Bush tax breaks, McCain's false badge of "maverick" would be shot full of holes by the Limbaugh, Hannity and Coulter gang. And they would indeed destroy him, if McCain were a Democrat.

snip//

McCain and Palin are telling us lies and fabricating myths: because they have taken up residence in a "spiritual vacuum" and their politics is a malignant "tumor of the soul" and because McCain and Palin are not Democrats and are allowed to get away with it. So, Barack and Joe: don't climb into their corporate cesspool of political corruption. Act like real, populist Democrats, tell the truth, show some guts and fight like you give a damn and are worth our trust and our votes. Make me and millions of other blue-collar types like me believe that the political hope of 1968 is possible again.

4. Regarding Coulter
I remember her criticizing Jimmy Carter saying something to the effect of, "he couldn't even land a helicopter in the desert." Several (I believe 11) marines died in that rescue attempt. Contemptible.
