Dean, in a word: Unstoppable
Edited on Fri Aug-01-03 09:18 AM by Skinner
From today's New York Post, a story from political correspondent Deborah Orin:

July 31, 2003 -- SUDDENLY, Democrats are coming smack up against a stunning fact: anti-war upstart Howard Dean has become their 2004 presidential front-runner.

He's the only Dem moving up in the polls. And Sen. John Kerry (Mass.) - the early quasi-front-runner with lots of establishment support after Al Gore dropped out in December - is going nowhere now.

Consider the tests of a front-runner. Take fund-raising. Dean, a physician and former governor of Vermont, topped the Dem pack in the last quarter by raking in $7.6 million.

No rival comes close in Internet savvy. Dean raised $507,000 on the 'Net last weekend in a whimsical "Cheney challenge" just to show his supporters could top Vice President Dick Cheney's $300,000 lunch. No other Dem could hope to do it.

6. I she a Kerry-hater?
You know what would be handy. A list of reporters, by paper or something, and what their agenda's seem to be. Like yous ay this woman is against Kerry, that would be on the list, and IIRC one of the Boston papers is similar, so that would go on the list. That way whenever something is posted we can analyze not only the info in the article, but also the authors motivation. Maybe this already exists and I'm just out of the loop.

10. say what you will, but i say

1)Dean, a physician and former governor of Vermont, topped the Dem pack in the last quarter by raking in $7.6 million.

2)No rival comes close in Internet savvy. Dean raised $507,000 on the 'Net last weekend in a whimsical "Cheney challenge" just to show his supporters could top Vice President Dick Cheney's $300,000 lunch. No other Dem could hope to do it.

3)Or take the first two test states that vote next January. Dean is either ahead or tied for the lead in Iowa. He tops the last few public polls in New Hampshire over Kerry by as many as three percentage points - but private polls are said to show a much bigger lead.

4)National polls don't matter that much right now - Iowa and New Hampshire are the key - but this week's Zogby national poll had Dean tied with Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.) and Rep. Dick Gephardt (Mo.) at 12 and Kerry at 9 percent.

5)Dean also has an intense core of supporters, another key front-runner test

as the big dog would say, "just the facts" :-)

13. It has to, I mean absolutely HAS TO, be a hit piece.
No other possible explanation. There is absolutely no way any of these things are true:

He's the only Dem moving up in the polls. And Sen. John Kerry (Mass.) - the early quasi-front-runner with lots of establishment support after Al Gore dropped out in December - is going nowhere now.

Dean also has an intense core of supporters, another key front-runner test.

None of these things is true...what's that?...they're all true?

Nah, hit piece. Period.

What part of my post was innacurate?(Or newsguyatl's) If Olin is a hit-and-run artist I'll take your word for it. But please point to the factual errors in the piece. A broken watch is right twice a day, why can't Olin get one right once in a while?

Point me to the errors in the piece and enlighten me, please.

26. You used the word "hit-piece." Point out the lies.
Specifically:

Which candidates are moving up in the polls? Which aren't?

Did Dean top the Democratic "pack" with $7.6 million in the 2nd qtr?

Is Dean either ahead or tied for the lead in Iowa public polls?

Does Zogby's national poll have Lieberman, Dean and Geppy at 12% and Kerry at 9%?

5. Good for Dean!
The only thing Dean makes me worried about is his stance on the tax cut. He is going to have to come up with a better sounding plan then "take all the tax breaks away". Kerry does a better job of just making it seem like he want's to stick it to the upper classes.

I'm not sure many are excited to pay more taxes in this bad economy even if it is needed.

But with the current field, he's clearly surging. At this point I will also treat Graham as a wildcard in this whole thing.

I'm very comfortable with Dean at the moment, though I do have misgivings on various issue details. Kerry would also make an outstanding president.

15.  NY Post is right wing - Murdoch owns it
I'm convinced that the GOP is behind "Dean-mania". It makes sense, strategy-wise: giving Dean legitimacy keeps the money rolling in for the GOP (by scaring GOP faithful) and keeps the money rolling in for Dean at the same time (by firing up Dean's base) so that he would win the nomination. That would be the best of all outcomes for the GOP: an enormous warchest and a weak Democratic challenger.

Like is this just a treat that will have us heaving in a few hours? But then again, I know more people for Dean then I know for Kerry.

You just don't like Dean so blame his success on GOP and Murdock....Everything she said were the facts.....Dean is the front runner and by November 2004 he will easily take the *bush out.

Check him out yourself.....

23. Yeah...it has nothing to do with Tom DeLay
saying last March that they would promote Dean's candidacy to cause dissension in the Dem party. It has nothing to do with the constant attention given to Dean by mediawhores like Fineman, Orin, and the American Spectator while at the same time taking shots at Kerry.

29. How would the affect
of having Sharpton and Braun drop out of the race unite the democratic party even more?
Sharpton and Braun are not creating hostility and they do not pose a threat to the other candidates that are running. They are giving different point of view on things.
