NYT: Lethargic Recovery of Uranium
... it is disheartening to learn of the government's pathetically weak efforts to recover bomb-grade uranium from research reactors around the world.
The material — enough to make perhaps a thousand nuclear bombs — had been distributed under the Eisenhower administration's Atoms for Peace program starting in the 1950's. Those were years when nuclear experts naïvely thought a clear line could be drawn between peaceful uses of nuclear materials and bomb-building activities. Now that several nations have been caught trying to build nuclear bombs under the cover of supposedly benign nuclear power programs, that original premise has been shown sadly mistaken. Yet only halting steps have been taken to recover the dangerous materials.
