To some degree this suppression of civil liberties is occurring precisely BECAUSE of British people's fears of terrorist outrages by radical Muslim groups, especially since the London bombings of 2005. Just as the Patriot Act was enabled by Americans' fears after 9-11.

Lots of people are very worried about the compulsory ID card introduction - both on civil liberties grounds and because our government are singularly incompetent and careless with people's confidential data, and you never know where it will end up!

Unfortunately, there are always too many people who think that 'if you've got nothing to hide, you shouldn't worry'.

In many cases a driver lisence, or a credit card, or other document you usaly have on you when you are out can go as ID CARDs where I live.. You don't need to mess around with the passport, who in theory is the _only_ official documentation in Norway.. But a Driver license is in many cases more than enough, becouse you have all the data the police need right there.. If they have your birth number who have 11 digits in Norway, you can find out allmoust everything you want about an person... It is like 222222 followed by 5 other digits.. Then you have everything you would posible need...

And the Star Wars thing was maybe more funny than seriousy then:)

8. It is already this way in Wisconsin.

The incident in question, which made it all the way to the state supreme court, happened right in front of my business. She was there a full 5 minutes before police approached her. I saw it. We had had some problems with people from the bar tearing pieces off our building, so I was watching.

The police were performing an ID checking raid on a bar two doors down, and right before that one of their patrons stepped outside to make a cellular call. The police asked her her name, and for some ID. She resisted, insisting she was just standing on the sidewalk talking on the phone.

Well the police took her into custody for not identifying herself, and she fought and lost. So now, in the state of Wisconsin, if law enforcement asks you for ID, you better have it. Because they have the right to detain you until they identify you.

"Papers please!"

*Edited to add she was of legal drinking age, and was not legally intoxicated. She was still charged.
