Warner Bros. Plans Layoffs, Outsourcing To India
Jan 9, 2009 10:34 pm US/Pacific

A published report says Warner Bros. plans to lay off scores of studio staffers and outsource jobs to India and Poland to cut costs amid falling entertainment revenues.

The Los Angeles Times on Friday cited anonymous sources familiar with the situation who said layoffs would affect scores of "back-office" workers in information systems, finance and accounting.

The number of jobs to be cut has not been finalized, but all divisions of the studio are likely to be affected.

Warner has about 8,000 employees around the world. In 2005, the studio cut about 400 jobs, including about 300 at its lot in Burbank.

Warner spokeswoman Sue Fleishman says no decisions have been made and would not provide more details.

2. This is one of the issues that Obama has to come in and deal with quickly. Jobs aren't disappearing
so much as being displaced to other nations.

3. Fine. I will not watch or pay for anything that has to do with Warner.
Isn't there some way to stop the bleeding? Has this question been asked of Obama. I know that he is talking about a 3,000 dollar tax credit for new hirings in usa, but what about the damn outsourcing. We do not need this right now.

9. I don't think they're accepting any more questions...
But I may be mistaken. You might want to double check. Also, even though they're closed for questions, you can still log in and vote.

13. The second round of questions has closed
There is now voting for the top 10. Probably we'll see future rounds.

16. ...and by doing that, how exactly are you helping American workers?
I work at Warner Bros...., and while I appreciate your support -- boycotting the company that I work for doesn't help me, at all.

Those of us who may (or may not) be here would love for people to come and see the movies and shows that we have worked on. Successful movies means that more money is available for more movies which means more work!

But, do what you feel is right...

6. When will WE layoff W-B?
W-B needs to be told that they will have much greater "falling entertainment revenues" when they start outsourcing jobs.

7. Outsourcing is the PROBLEM ....
NOT the solution ....

When American WB workers get laid off, there will be less money available to generate revenues to pay for WB entertainment ....

More of the same corporate cannibalism that is destroying America .... Where are the 'America First' whackos when we need them ?

10. I keep hoping that Obama is going to come out right and
say the job loss to outsourcing will come to an end. I think the open questions on change.gov will reopen again in the next few days. There were 2 questions in the top 10 from this most recent round that addressed outsourcing/worker visas, but they still have not answered either question. They did answer another question about jobs in the USA, it was not one of the top ten questions though. So sad, more jobs gone.

11. I work at Warner Bros. -- we have had a shitload of layoffs in my department
in the past couple of years -- all union technical people. Work has been outsourced to India, as well, and when it comes back it is usually fucked up and has to be done again.

Not looking forward to going into work tomorrow.

12. I've been getting some side jobs lately....
And it's all work that was outsourced to India, was fucked up and needs redone. I think that slowly, companies are beginning to see that outsourcing isn't all that great period.
