Man accused of selling daughter for cash, beer
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gyiN9M_aACs2g4K6OAD8FL5JPQzQD95LRABO4

Police have arrested a Greenfield man for allegedly arranging to sell his 14-year-old daughter into marriage in exchange for $16,000, 100 cases of beer and several cases of meat.

Police said they only learned of the deal after the 36-year-old man went to them to get his daughter back because payment wasn't made as promised. The man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of human trafficking.

Officers also arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of statutory rape. Investigators believe the girl went willingly with the man, but she's under California's legal age of consent and can't legally marry.

Police say arranged marriages involving underage girls have become a problem in this small Central Coast farming community.

1. That's child selling, sex trade
not an "arranged marriage".

2. I don't know what strikes me most about that article:
1) A man selling his daughter.
2) For beer.
3) In California.
4) And it's becoming a problem in that town
5) And the father was stupid enough to go to the cops when he was stiffed.

3. Hmmm... no names? This sort of marriage arrangement has..
been common in many cultures. I wouldn't give them a pass if they came from such a culture, but I could understand it.

(Other cultures, though, it's not so acceptable and it's just lowlife scumbags selling their kids.)

6. Your post gave me pause to think, so I decided to look into that.
It has an interesting demographic makeup: "The racial makeup of the city was 39.65% White, 1.18% Black or African American, 1.19% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 51.95% from other races, and 5.11% from two or more races. 87.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race." (Thus saith wiki).

Also, it's worth noting that recently there has been an influx of immigrants from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, the majority of whom are indigenous people. There are probably around 3500 indigenous Oaxacans living in Greenfield, CA. Apparently, arranged marriages aren't unheard of among those people.

9. Here you go
GREENFIELD, Calif. — Police have arrested a Greenfield man for allegedly arranging to sell his 14-year-old daughter into marriage in exchange for $16,000, 100 cases of beer and several cases of meat.

Police say they only learned of the deal after 36-year-old Marcelino de Jesus Martinez went to them to get his daughter back because payment wasn't made as promised.

Martinez was arrested Sunday on suspicion of human trafficking.

Officers also arrested 18-year-old Margarito de Jesus Galindo on suspicion of statutory rape. Investigators believe the girl went willingly with Galindo, but she's under California's legal age of consent and can't legally marry.

Police say arranged marriages involving underage girls have become a problem in this small Central Coast farming community.
