Post mortems on a pathetic president
By Bruce Watson
Published on January 16, 2009

... although historians have condemned Bush to last place, what will they write about him in hindsight? Imagine some excerpts.

Some will be coy. From the forthcoming "Bush: Eight Long, Lonnnnng Years": "Although many have called Bush II the worst President in American history, could it be he was merely the worst president since 1789? Only time will tell" ...

But despite what historians write, Bush may have the last laugh. The average American does not read history and knows little about our past other than what he learned, sort of, in high school. Mainstream texts like "Our American Pageant," and "The Promise of a Nation" are carefully written so as not to offend - or inform - anyone. And how will they regard the 43rd president?

From "The Soaring American Spirit": "Though somewhat unpopular, Bush cut taxes, encouraged investment, and fought two wars overseas, wars he started on his own initiative. He remained in office for eight years and was the president for all of them. Millions of Americans even called him 'President Bush.' Many even liked him. His legacy continues into our own time" ...
