Obama speech censored in China
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7841580.stm

China has censored parts of the new US president's inauguration speech that have appeared on a number of websites.

Live footage of the event on state television also cut away from Barack Obama when communism was mentioned.

China's leaders appear to have been upset by references to facing down communism and silencing dissent.

English-language versions of the speech have been allowed on the internet, but many of the Chinese translations have omitted sensitive sections.

Selective editing

China keeps a firm grip on the country's media outlets and censors their news reports as a matter of routine.

Like the rest of the world, it has been keenly following developments in the United States; President Obama's inauguration was front page news.

But the authorities seem not to want ordinary Chinese people to read the full, unexpurgated version of the president's speech.

2. I WAS THERE WHEN OBAMA WAS ELECTED NOV 4.
I was surprised the internet was not blocking U.S. news. But I watched CNN for about 4 hours in internet bar (called "wongba") because this election was big to me.

Unfortunately, there is a segment of the Chinese population that is illiterate and cannot speak or read english that well. How do I know? I was there as an ESL teacher (English as Second Language).

I lived in Shen Yang which is north of Beijing and west of North Korean Peninsula. I was, however, tickeled when I held Q & A after a class and a student asked me (in english) if I voted for Obama. The majority of the students I worked with like Obama. They know what is going on in the world. They dispised Bush. I enjoy teaching. Its what I thrive on. Unfortunately, I had to come home sooner than planned because of unexpected matters. But all I can say is the students, in my opinion, are smarter than most people think--especially the younger generation. If a chinese student makes it to a university (ShenYang University or Liaoning University), they will have greater success in english abilities. Not only that, they will have better opportunity to immigrate to U.S or any other english speaking country. The population that is uneducated, are the people who suffer from lack of information outside China. I think when I watched some of the local news that Obama won election, it seemed like it was only a few seconds and then on to next story. It is my hope that the younger generation gain strength and become a larger influence in China. That is my wish.
