Ceremony purges White House of evil spirits
On Monday I witnessed, firsthand, the Saging of the White House. The White House is now free of any evil spirits that may have still been lingering from the Bush/Cheney Administration. And, I have to admit – I feel a little bit better myself.

Saging is a process by which bundles of Sage herb are ignited and left to smolder. This creates a thick, pleasant-smelling, blue smoke which, according to Wiccan tradition, has a cleansing effect, thus removing the area of unwanted energy.

No one is certain whether the event occurred in close enough proximity to the White House to have any effect. But if the mindset and spirit of the crowd can have the effect of amplifying the cleansing effects of sage, I’m absolutely certain it was a success.

1. My neighbor gave me a sage bundle
It's up in the garage attic drying. I can hardly wait to use it.

4. Not just Wiccan, plains indigenous people do this ("smudging") to create pleasant ambiance in rooms
or spaces people will be occupying. I think it's referred to as "purifying" for lack of a better translation.

At art fair booths with indigenous artists exhibiting, you can usually see the bowl or plate with the partly-burned sage bundle sitting in a corner.

17. True.
As a Native American I can attest to that. I was unaware it was even a Wiccan tradition and I can remember my grandmother smudging when I was about 5 or 6.

Not that there is anything wrong with it being a Wiccan tradition. In fact Wiccan and our tribe's religious rituals are remarkably similar.

11. Rubbish?
Nothing wrong with spiritual rituals, especially in raising the spirit. We've seen what massive negativity can do, right?

21. So if a person does not believe as you believe
their belief is rubbish and they deserve only contempt. Right. I've heard that one before.

OK. Hey ... are you related to that Pentacostal whacko that lives down the road from me? Same attitude. Different belief system. Same results.

18. I go to monthly Native-American-style drumming (primal drumming) ...
we call it "smudging."

I wouldn't live in a new house without it, and everyone knows that the White House REALLY needed it after the last residents.
