Bill Kristol's Last NYT Op-Ed!
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/26/opinion/26kristol.html?hp

Will Obama Save Liberalism?

By WILLIAM KRISTOL
Published: January 25, 2009
All good things must come to an end. Jan. 20, 2009, marked the end of a conservative era.

Since Ronald Reagan’s election in 1980, conservatives of various sorts, and conservatisms of various stripes, have generally been in the ascendancy. And a good thing, too! Conservatives have been right more often than not — and more often than liberals — about most of the important issues of the day: about Communism and jihadism, crime and welfare, education and the family. Conservative policies have on the whole worked — insofar as any set of policies can be said to “work” in the real world. Conservatives of the Reagan-Bush-Gingrich-Bush years have a fair amount to be proud of....

Not much here, but the last line is the best:

This is William Kristol’s last column.

So long Bill...I for one won't miss your babble.

3. That's some legendary denialism.
Kristol does exemplify one core doctrine of modern conservatism: if you repeat a lie enough, it will become the truth.

There was no farewell from Bill. Just this from the Times at the end:

This is William Kristol’s last column.

And why is he being shown the door now?

It's like what happens in public is kabuki theater compared to what is going on behind the scenes.

23. We're celebrating tonight!
My husband called me at work to tell me the good news. We've both written to the NYT public editor multiple times (including "it's been a year, can you please not renew him?"). This year-long stupid experiment is finally over. I will never understand WHY they signed him up. It's not like his readers are going to buy the commie/red/blah blah blah NYT.

before we have a toast with the good stuff.

Maybe Brooks needs to spend more time with his family too. He's probably more dangerous because people actually take him seriously.

28. You might find this interesting about Kristol.

The Sacking of Bill Kristol

by Scott Horto

The famous neoconservative published his final New York Times column today. Scott Horton, who broke news on Kristol's involvement in the selection of Sarah Palin, reports on the real reasons the Gray Lady didn't renew his contract.

*snip: A source close to the Times says Kristol's ideology wasn't the issue. The problems were more fundamental.

31. Good article - thanks for posting
<<The New York Times’ decision not to renew Bill Kristol’s opinion column was because of the conservative writer’s sloppiness and uneven quality, according to a reliable source...>>

When we wrote in, we focused on his poor writing skills, factual errors (maybe, like Stephen Colbert, he's not a fan of facts), and phoning it in. Oh, and plagiarism. And campaigning for Palin. I'll stop now.

If Jon Stewart helped do him in...too funny! This part was great:
<<“Appearing once again on The Daily Show, Bill Kristol, Jon Stewart's favorite whipping boy (‘Bill Kristol, aren't you ever right?’), on Thursday night defended the McCain-Palin ticket, at one point informing the show's host that he was getting his news from suspect sources. ‘You're reading The New York Times too much,’ he declared. ‘Bill, you WORK for The New York Times!’ Stewart pointed out.”

That, apparently, was the last straw for the Gray Lady.>>

And, kohodog, I agree that Brooks should spend more time with his family. Maybe the Times won't even replace Kristol...saves 'em from laying someone off!

29. He claims conservative policies work!
He ought to write a book entitled "the Audacity of Mendacity."

What Kristol fails to realize is that the things he claims Obama references that show he is a "conservative," “our forebears,” “our founding documents,” even — political correctness alert! — “our founding fathers,” show nothing of the sort. Democrats have never been opposed to the thought of the founders, the principle of the rule of law or the Constitution. In our time, it has been the conservatives who have violated the Constitution, and it has been the conservatives who have acted irresponsibly, whenever and wherever folks have so foolishly elected them.

Anyone who has been paying attention must note that it has been Democrats who have upheld the Constitution (except when it came to the impeachment of W). It has been we who have been patriotic, but is has been the Republicans who have employed a sort of jingoistic patriotism most successfully in electioneering. In Kristol's concluding paragraph, does he mean Obama will serve the nation if he simply does what the Republicans have done, which is to do whatever they want while cloaking everything in the rhetoric of patriotism, or is it that he hopes Obama will become a militarist?

Or is it that Kristol simply does not matter anymore, if he ever did, any more than Harvey Mansfield, who, we must note in Straussian fashion, is the first authority cited by Kristol?
