Pat Robertson Said Armageddon Would Be A "Battle" Over Who Controls Jerusalem
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Pat Robertson said Armageddon would be a "battle" over who controls Jerusalem.

Robertson on a broadcast Monday of his "700 Club" television show said he is "adamantly opposed" to the division of the city.

Armageddon, he said, is "not going to be fought at Megiddo" but will be the "battle of Jerusalem," when "the forces of all nations come together and try to take Jerusalem away from the Jews."

"Jews are not going to give up Jerusalem -- they shouldn't -- and the rest of the world is going to insist they give it up," he said.

Robertson added that Jerusalem is a "spiritual symbol that must not be given away" because "Jesus Christ the Messiah will come down to the part of Jerusalem that the Arabs want," and that's "not good."

1. why is this man not in an asylum?

He is obviously insane. He has paranoid delusions, which he interprets as some sort of religious enlightenment, for which a bunch of other loonies send him money.

2. What a nutjob!
I can see the world coming together to make Israel do a lot of things, but forcing the Jews out is not one of them. He better have a chat with Jesus... and actually listen this time.

4. The Mayans predicted the world would end in 12/21/2012.
On 12/21/1981, BBC1 aired the series finale to "Blake's 7".

On 12/21/2009, somebody will unwrap my big package. :eyes:

The Mayans probably ran out of rocks to draw larger calendars on too. :sarcasm:

In short, bafflegab spewed over conjecture by some theorist just winds people up. And not in a good way.

Because they won't allow Jews in that part of the city?

12. Why does it matter if Jesus comes down to an Arab controlled Jerusalem?
He's one of their prophets too. Or maybe he's meant to kick some Arab ass.
I'd be real surprised if any of us, including Pat Robertson, knows.

13. Yes, and he said this would all happen in 2007. His response to this mistake:
People praying stopped God from instigating the Apocalypse. I can't stand this man. He's a charlatan of the highest order, right up there with Jerry Farwell. The Earth will be a better place when Pat Robinson leaves it.

14. Even Biblically that's not quite right.
Armageddon comes from Greek for Hills of Megido, Megido being a hill fortress that guarded important ancient trade routes. It was also a convenient way for invading forces to enter Palestine.

According to Revelation, the big battle between Christ and the anti-Christ crescendos there, and then Christ returns to Jerusalem as its liberator and champion.

He really should check the manual from time to time.

15. Pat needs to read his bible again.
There is a verse where God says He will make Jerusalem "a stumbling block for all nations", and it's certainly a big part of the conflict over there, as it is a holy site for Jews, Muslims, and Christians alike. But the "end of the world" battle clearly takes place in the valley of Megiddo, hence the name "Armegeddon" (translated from "Har Megiddo" originally)

Biblical prophecy also says that the Antichrist will proclaim himself to be "God" from the rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem. Currently, that's a problem because the Muslims built the Dome of the Rock/Al Aqsa mosque right on the site of Solomon's temple, which was nuked by the Romans in 70 AD.

So in other words, you have the third holiest site in Islam occupying the real estate that once held the holiest site in Judaism. And both Old Testament (Jewish) and New Testament (Christian) prophecies say that the Temple is going to be built before the Messiah appears - the main difference being whether you believe it's his first visit, or a comeback tour.

And of course, just east of the old city is the hill where JC was crucified.

All the more reason why Jerusalem should become an unaffiliated city-state of its own, not attached to either Israel or a Palestinian state. Leave it neutral and open to all, but controlled by no one faction.

18. One of the reasons preached by Urban II for the First Crusade [1095]...
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 10:25 PM by Adsos Letter
according to Guibert de Nogent was that Jerusalem must be in the hands of Christians so that the apocalyptic battle between Christ and Antichrist could occur:

"And you ought, furthermore, to consider with the utmost deliberation, if by your labors, God working through you, it should occur that the Mother of churches (Jerusalem) should flourish anew to the worship of Christianity, whether, perchance, He may not wish other regions of the East to be restored to the faith against the approaching time of the Antichrist. For it is clear that Antichrist is to do battle not with the Jews, not with the Gentiles; but, according to the etymology of his name, He will attack Christians. And if Antichrist finds there no Christians (just as at present when scarcely any dwell there), no one will be there to oppose him, or whom he may rightly overcome. According to Daniel and Jerome, the interpreter of Daniel, he is to fix his tents on the Mount of Olives; and it is certain, for the apostle teaches it, that he will sit at Jerusalem in the Temple of the Lord, as though he were God. And according to the same prophet, he will first kill three kings of Egypt, Africa, and Ethiopia, without doubt for their Christian faith: This, indeed, could not at all be done unless Christianity was established where now is paganism...

"...With the end of the world already near, even though the Gentiles fail to be converted the Lord (since according to the apostle there must be a withdrawal from the faith), it is first necessary, according to their prophecy, that the Christian sway be renewed in those regions either through you, or others, whom it shall please God to send before the coming of Antichrist, so that the head of all evil, who is to occupy there (Jerusalem) the throne of the kingdom, shall find some support of the faith to fight against him."

"Ponder, I beg you, how full of joy and delight our hearts will be when we shall see the Holy City (Jerusalem) restored with your little help, and the prophet's, nay divine, words fulfilled in our times."

Only one example of many, but significant in our era, when control of the Temple Mount (by whatever "justification") is deemed so important by so many. The whole issue of the control of Jerusalem is toxic to peace efforts, and its religious significance to some has been used too often to justify bloodshed. I agree with you, the city should become an unaffiliated city-state.

19. That's funny... I don't remember the Bible saying that Jesus needed any help
about holding any territory where He'd arrive. What I remember as a directive He gave was, "flee to the mountains" when that goes down. (Sounds like good advice, too.)

Pat likes to re-write it his way.
