Iraq's dogs poisoned, then gunned down
The shotgun blast rips into the stray dog's midsection, sending it tumbling over and over. Agonizing yelps echo through the streets as it tries to reach and bite at the gaping wound. Minutes later, the dog is dead.

A few miles away, a puppy eats a piece of poisoned meat. Its body starts to twitch and spasm as the toxins kick in. It dies within 15 minutes.

The Baghdad dog-culling program comprises two vets, a council official and a police officer armed with a shotgun. The vets distribute bits of meat poisoned with strychnine. If the poison doesn't kill the dogs, the police officer steps in with the shotgun.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SCPA) International calls the methods used by the Baghdad culling program inhumane. SPCA spokeswoman Terri Crisp says the organization understands that Iraq is a war zone, posing a unique set of challenges, but alternatives such as mobile spay and neuter and vaccination programs are available.

"We've seen this work in other countries that have very similar stray animal problems," Crisp said.

2. Perhaps..
..this is necessary to ensure the safety (that sort of sounds funny) of civilians in those areas...but it still makes me cry. I could not read the whole story.

As the saying goes...the More I learn about people, the more I love my dog\cat.

9. No excuse
It is no excuse to treat animals like that. Hitler also has a reason why he did want to exterminate the Jews. Hasn't he?

3. Bias against dogs isn't uncommon in Muslim areas.
There's a quote in the Quran where Mohammed expresses his disgust for dogs. He orders all black dogs killed, and states that all dogs not being used for farming, security, or hunting should be killed. He says that if it were up to him, ALL dogs would be killed, but they're Allah's creatures so he can't make that order.

The result? Many religious Muslims abhor dogs, and very few nations with Islamic majorities have laws protecting them from abuse.

On the other hand, the Quran says in several places that Muhammed loved cats. There are stories of him doing things to make his cats comfortable, a story about how his life was saved by a cat (snake almost bit him, but a cat attacked it first), and another story he told of a woman who was consigned to hell for starving a cat to death. The result? People have been KILLED for abusing cats in fundamentalist nations.

Religion does funny things to peoples sense of morality.

4. I'd say religion does funny things to human senses in general.
Big slobbering canine face-lick to thee and thine, Mr. Mohammad, from a very black dog indeed. Bow Wow, you ignorant cocksucker.

11. Ouch!
I knew that but it didn't occur to me at the moment. I'm playing San Andreas right now and I suppose the Dr. Dre version kind of stuck in my head. Being 43, I grew up with the FUNK!

Thanks for the reminder.

is in the Hadith not the Quran.

http://www.quran-islam.org/119.html

However, you're right in the sense that there are a lot of anti-dog Hadith, however there is one interesting one that paints a different picture:

"A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, Allah forgave her because of that."

7. This story is more about the horrors of war
There are thousands of stray dogs roaming the streets of Baghdad, sometimes attacking people. I think the methods are deplorable but please read the story before making blanket condemnations of a whole religion.

I've read stories of packs of stray dogs attacking, mauling and killing people in the US and around the world. At least we have access to other means to combat the problem.
