Unemployment Report 3-6-09, 8.1% Double that would be closer


While the actual unemployment rate is 8.1%, that figure does not fully represent the actual health of employment in our country. Why? Very simply there are thousands of workers who have given up looking for work. They do not figure into the rate. Additionally, there are thousands who are underemployed, meaning they are working part time but would like to work fulltime.

They only count people on unemployment insurance, many have never paid into unemployment insurance, with a questionable number of illegal’s in the country at 20 million and part time workers that are now unemployed, just double that 8.1% or what ever number they say. That’s 16.2% now, during the depression they said it was 25%.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there are some 12,500,000 people out of work representing a 8.1% rate.
The BLS states that another 2,100,000 people were not counted, but are presumed to be unemployed and essentially have given up on finding a job. That would make the number 9.5% (based on a base of 154,320,988).
If we start adding in illegals, there's a wide disparity as to how many are out there. The U.S. immigration office "pegs" it a between 11 and 20 million.
Anecdotally, I know of several who either have already returned, or are in the process of returning, home to their native country.
Let's say conservatively that the number is 10,000,000. That alone brings the number up to 15.9%, if we keep our base "legal" number at 154.3m.

Untrue. The Unemployment rate comes from a Household survey. You are considered Unemployed if you did not work during the reference week, actively looked for work in the last month, and are available to work. If you are on temporary layoff, you needn't have looked in the last month.

Immigration status is irrelvant.
