UAB gets $5 million anonymous donation from 'feminist fairy godmother'

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is the latest university to receive an anonymous donation from the mysterious philanthropist who has given at least $86 million to colleges and universities that are presided over by women. UAB received $5 million.

UAB's president, Carol Garrison said the donation came as a surprise and that it is the largest anonymous sum the university has ever received.

The donation came with specific instructions for its use. $4 million must be used for scholarships for women and minorities and the remaining $1 million can be used however the university chooses.

Of UAB's 17,000 students, 59% are women and 37% are minorities. UAB is an urban university that caters to a widely diverse student population. The donation comes at a perfect time for the university, during an economic crisis that has many students wondering how to pay their tuition.
