Ever since the 2000 election, the Republicans have freely allowed themselves to be captured by the far right wing, evangelical "wing nuts".
That decision "came home to roost" for them in the 2008 election. However, it seems the Republican leadership has, so far at least, done precious little to try and wrest that control back from the evangelicals.
With the 2010 mid-term elections now looming, and with a number of US Senators (and all of the US Congress) up for re-election, Senator John Cornyn is well justified in his concern that the likes of those blowhards Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Gingrich (and their ilk) have now become de facto spokespersons for the Party.
