War worries spur short rush on duct tape, plastic sheeting
Area hardware stores sold out stocks of duct tape and plastic sheets last week to customers bent on trying to protect themselves from possible terrorist poison gas or radioactive "dirty bomb" attacks.
They were responding to suggestions by U.S. Homeland Security Chief Tom Ridge and other government officials that they prepare "secure rooms" within their homes and tape over window gaps to protect themselves in the event of attacks. The comments came after the federal government upgraded the country's terror alert level to the second-highest level.
