Despite layoffs, IBM powers ahead in India
July 2009, Posted On: 7/8/2009

ARMONK, N.Y. — Though IBM is notoriously tight-lipped about its layoffs, many reports suggest that Big Blue has chopped as many as 10,000 workers so far in 2009. Earlier this year the tech giant caused a stir when it was also widely reported that many of these jobs might actually be shipped to other countries such as India. If recent activity is any indication, India appears to have become a strong focal point for the company.

The Armonk-based IBM recently signed a $15 million IT outsourcing deal with large Indian water purification and hygiene cleaning company Eureka Forbes Ltd., a subsidiary of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group.

As part of the five-year deal, IBM will provide business consulting, package implementation, infrastructure and application management services to Eureka Forbes. IBM will also leverage its research capabilities to offer unique tools that help Eureka Forbes improve its revenue, the company said. Others services include: helpdesk, server management, security compliance and network management.

Eureka Forbes is hoping the IBM support will help the company increase its focus on customer satisfaction, greater profitability and enhanced collaboration with its sales force and dealer network. IBM said it will specifically help Eureka Forbes increase product revenue, optimize inventory holding, reduce selling and general administrative expenses, as well as increase revenue from annual maintenance contracts.

1. Makes sense.
After all, the economy here in the US is strong and unemployment is low so this isn't surprising.*

4. IBM should just become an Indian company...
Let them beg India for bailouts.
