Poll: Voters Reject Health Care Mandate Without Public Option, Medicare Buy-In

A new poll suggests that voters are not pleased by the idea of health insurance mandates without a public option or a Medicare expansion.

Conducted by Research 2000 for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) and Democracy for America (DFA), the survey finds only 33 percent of likely voters favor a health care bill that does not include a public health insurance option and does not expand Medicare, but does require all Americans to get health insurance. Slightly more Democrats -- 37 percent -- favor the idea, while only 30 percent of Republicans and 31 percent of independents do.

Meanwhile, if the public option and Medicare buy-in are added, 58 percent of people support the idea. The number of Republican supporters drops to 22 percent, but independent support rises to 57 percent and Democratic support to a whopping 88 percent.

"This poll shows voters in full-blown revolt against the Senate bill," said PCCC co-founder Stephanie Taylor. "Only one-third of voters support mandates without a public option, while nearly two-thirds want the public option and Medicare expansion. This will be a disaster of epic proportions for Democrats in 2010 if it's not fixed -- fast."

11. I'm convinced it's Obama. If it were up to the Dems they would be going with reconciliation

so a simple majority would be required for passage. I think just about every Democrat on 'the Hill' feels.. 'why should a few Republicans who call themselves Democrats sabotage what the country needs and wants?'.

Without the Public Option there is really no cost control in this bill and it will fail, in that regard, in less than 10 years. The costs of the insurance company subsidies will be breaking the budget by then and of course the Fascist GOP will be saying "See, the Damn Democrats screwed up our wonderful health insurance industry."

will not hear the complete results of this poll on your M$M. It's always "Only 33% of the American people are in favor of this HCR bill!"

How many times have we heard it? Never a mention of the public option or Medicare buy-in. Because they don't want that little ditty to become part of the discussion.

This is the very reason so many of us are pissed off. Time after time I have watched Democrats on TV fail to challenge the way the poll results are skewed. Why do they do this? As if you didn't know!

I have written letters, sent faxes, etc. detailing by utter disgust with this bill. I'm sure I am not alone. Now I know most people are not really involved in following this debacle but nobody I know is happy. The righties and pissed, the lefties are pissed, and the middle either already is or will be pissed.

Is the Democratic leadership off in some fantasy land? They must do polls of their own. Do the lobbyists, Lieberman, Nelson, etc. have that much power?

I think this bill if passed in its current form will be a gift to the Republicans and a disaster for the Democrats.

So why are they doing it?
