3. All countries have missionaries, but..
Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 12:13 PM by Lars77
American missionaries have a unique mass-production type of mentality it seems.

9. Missionaries = Mentally Ill Fanatics
Missionaries don't even read the damned Bible they are supposedly teaching others. They need to read that one line in the Bible about taking "the log out of one's own eye before trying to remove the splinter from another's". The same goes for all the right wing radical radio hatemongers, like Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck and their ilk. Like Diogenes, I have been trying to find one conservative Christian who isn't a complete hypocrite. I find it impossible to be a 'Christian' and a 'right wing republican' at the same time. Their beliefs are totally opposite of each other.

6. Oh, Christ (no pun intended). Dump the fucking things in the ocean to make way for
some more food and water shipments. Using this tragedy to proselytize stunned, shocked and bleeding people, while entirely predictable, is so far beyond the fucking pale I have no words for it.

Take the asshole who made this call to Haiti and put him on a street corner with a pile of MREs and a pile of his magic Bibles to hand out, and see which people want.

22. abso-f'in-lutely
How can anyone make room on a plane or boat for electronic bibles when people are dying daily for lack of the most basic necessities?

23. But they're not even good for that
They're made of plastic and metal. They're audio bibles, not old-school books.

25. So true.
People are dying of thirst, hunger, or lack of medical care, and yet, the best these idiots can think of is to send bibles.

Intense face-palm stupid.

10. What stupid anti-religious drivel. There is NOTHING wrong with sending bibles to people that sing
praise to god after 200,000 people are crushed and trappped. The god hate attitude will wind up costing us, as it always does.

11. Agreed.
And I'm an atheist. Honestly, what exactly is the problem here?

My favorite line from the article, though, is this: "The Proclaimer is self-powered and can play the Bible in the jungle, desert or ... even on the moon!"

Really? On the moon? I wonder how you hear it without any atmosphere!

13. It's obscene to send bibles rather than water, food, clothing and building supplies.
Edited on Wed Jan-20-10 07:49 PM by Ken Burch
It implies that the earthquake happened because Haitians were sinful.

Jesus would be disgusted.

This isn't Christianity, it's puritan sanctimony at it's White European best.

14. Whether or not you believe Jesus died for your sins, it is apparent that some of those people would
rather have a bible than food or water. I am an atheist christian, of sorts. But the vitriol, and venom, belie a far deeper issue.

19. This isn't about hating Christianity. It's about hating insensitivity.
The earthquake didn't happen because Haiti wasn't Christian enough.

15. They're not "sending Bibles instead of food and water"
Plenty of food and water are being sent to Haiti. There are Haitian Christians, you know. And perhaps a Bible is exactly what they would like to have at a time like this. In countries where Christians are persecuted, for example, they actually want Bibles more than anything else......

16. In countries where Christians are persecuted, yes, I can see that.
But Haiti is an overwhelmingly Christian country. They already HAVE tons of Bibles.

28. The MSF had to go to the local market and buy an amputation saw
because they cannot get their supplies in, because the airport is congested. It's not like "plenty of food and water" is being sent, let alone supplies.

This is the greatest disaster ever seen in the western hemisphere. I can accept that some people will want to seek comfort with their God (although i will never understand why) but this is just sick.

27. They're having enough trouble getting needed food, water, and medical supplies in.
Valuable transport resources that can be used to bring in necessary goods shouldn't be diverted to bringing in electronic widgets of whatever purpose. After everyone has received the necessities for survival then people can send in whatever kind of Bibles they want.

If your children were hungry, dying of thirst, or in need of medical attention, would you appreciate an electronic Bible over food, water, and medicine?

26. They are sending 600 of these to Haiti.
Maybe they cost $20 a unit. (I'm just guessing at a price) That makes $12,000. The money would be far better spent on say, antibiotics. Plus $12k of antibiotics would take far less space on a plane than 600 electric bibles would require.
