As my new report, Movement Behind Uganda's "Kill the Gays" Bill Organizing in Newark begins,

Street by street, block by block, organized by city ward, PrayforNewark's squads of church members are walking their city, praying for residents and businesses... its leaders claim their effort now fields enough volunteers to pray for almost every street in the New Jersey city... the effort is directly tied to an international movement that, as detailed in my new video documentary Transforming Uganda, played a significant role in organizing and inspiring Ugandan politicians who have backed the internationally notorious "kill the gays" bill, the Anti-Homosexuality Bill currently before Uganda's parliament.

Troutfishing's diary :: :: As a preface, let me start with this:

The movement in question in not synonymous with The Family, as covered by journalist Jeff Sharlet. That entity has played a major role (in both promoting the bill, it would seem, and later opposing it after a world outcry over the proposed legislation) in Uganda's Anti Homosexuality bill, before Uganda's parliament, which would mandate that HIV positive Ugandan citizens be executed by hanging and would also require Ugandans to turn in to the Ugandan police, or face a three year prison sentence, family, friends, and acquaintances who might be gay.

While The Family is a world association of elites, especially politicians, the Transformation movement organizing in Newark, in many other cities across America as well, in Uganda and around the globe, is organizing populist fronts from the ground level up. The Transformation movement promotes ideology, and an entire worldview - in which gays are possessed by demons. Officially, the idea is that being homosexual can be cured through exorcism, the casting out of those alleged gay demons. But, unofficially, the agenda seems to be to purge all gays from society, through imprisonment and even execution. And, gays would seem to be merely the first, but far from the last, societal on the list slated for elimination.

are slated to appear together in a joint prayer/photo op organized by the Family.

4. What is the difference, as it will play on Ugandan media?

Will that difference parse out in the Ugandan media, do you think? Do you think there is an level of contact between any President and a man writing genocide laws that is acceptable? Is that your implication? Are you fine with the idea that this man will be on Ugandan TV talking about his prayer meeting with President Obama and also his legislation? Do you think he will say "please understand that we were merely in the same ballroom"? Really?
How this will play in Uganda, that is the question. If he does this, it is a huge mistake. If he allows a photo, it will be worse. I hope they cancel, that is what I hope. He should not attend that event.

6. Your conjecture about my 'implication'

is interesting. Bogus, but interesting.

I think the Prez needs to stay as far away from that motherfucker as humanly possible, unless it's to witness that scumbags execution for hate crimes.

I believe the President should cancel. Or make sure this prick never gets near the venue.

I think that prayer breakfast exemplifies the absolute stranglehold the misogynistic, homophobic, fascist outfit that these Fundies have over the country and the Government.

I wish they were all banned.


But I don't think saying they'll be 'appearing together' is completely accurate.

7. I encourage the sort of clarity you are now using.

And again, I offer that being 'completely accurate' is not only not my job, but will most certainly not be the objective of the Ungandan politicians or their media. And how this will play in the Ugandan media is all that matters. This is after all, a man who would not be photographed with Gavin Newsome, so one can assume they might think twice before doing this.
This is no longer in the realm of hair splitting and the like. It is just stupid for him or any of those politicians to share a room of any kind for any reason with that man. There is not only no justification for it, there is no pay out for doing it. He gets nothing, the Ugandan and the Family get him. A lousy trade off, to say the least.
