Poll: Oregon voters likely to raise taxes on corporations, wealthy

A new poll indicates that Oregon voters strongly favor two ballot measures that would raise taxes on corporations, as well as on individuals making over $125,000 and households with an income over $250,000.

Measure 66, which would raise taxes on higher-earning taxpayers, is favored by 52% to 39%. Measure 67, which would increase both the corporate minimum tax and certain corporate tax rates, is favored by 50% to 40%.

The increased revenue would go to maintain public services, schools, health care, and public safety. Over $1 billion is at stake -- $733 million in direct revenue and the rest in matching funds from federal programs. The bulk of the increases would be temporary.

Both measures were passed last year by the Oregon state legislature, but a group called Oregonians Against Job-Killing Taxes quickly raised over a million dollars and collected enough signatures to force the proposals to be decided by a special election this month.

Ironically, this has now had the effect of moving the voting, which concludes next Tuesday, to a period when anti-corporate feeling is on the increase.

Now this is a real populist revolt.

1. This has been a major battle here, with the corporations putting tons
and tons of money into anti-measure ads, which are some of the most outrageous lies and distortion I've seen. The Oregonian has really stepped into the fray, publishing editorials against the measures and recently, running ads that look like they are part of the paper against the measures. I have cancelled my subscription to the paper over their publisher's handling of this and enormous outright blatant move to the right.

My ballot was filled out and sent back the day after I got it. Hoping that this one will be in the win column.

4. It's interesting how much ad time they are buying up on KPOJ here for these ads...
It's interesting hear Thom Hartmann talk about these issues, and then hear ads saying that these are "job killing" bills, etc. right after that.

3. And they retroactively LOWER taxes on the unemployed!
Edited on Sat Jan-23-10 01:30 PM by cascadiance
Make sure and repeat that to your unemployed friends in Oregon. They will LOWER your taxes by exempting a big chunk of your unemployment benefits from state taxation.

6. Yes on 66 and 67
We vote by mail here in Oregon. The day after I mailed my YES vote in, a neighbor stopped by to ask us to vote YES. This is quite positive because we did not have any similar canvaser during the 2008 campaign.

7. Get it done! Then please come to Texas to see how we can do
something similar, please.

Hell, here we're in the process of selling already built roads to corporations so they can be converted to toll roads!

10. Good for my former state!
I recall Oregon taxes as being extraordinarily flat, as if they had not been sufficiently indexed for inflation. The qualifying income for the highest bracket was something ridiculously low.

in the dishonest name that the high paid consultants have chosen for their front group.

Next thing you know, they'll be calling foreign invasions freedom fights...

Or something.
