Is It Time for Vatican III?
Maybe Church Community Should Meet to Discuss Change in a New World
Opinion by FATHER EDWARD L. BECK, C.P.
April 2, 2010 —

As Christians begin their celebration of the Easter season, the Catholic church seems stuck in Good Friday. Just when some would like to turn their attention to the profound mysteries of their faith, they are instead mystified by yet another round of horrendous sex abuse stories making headlines.

Most Catholics in the United States were convinced that the issue of sexual abuse by priests had been adequately dealt with after the last go round more than eight years ago. In many ways, it has been. U.S. bishops adopted strict policies of zero-tolerance after the abuse scandal exploded in 2002. Bishops are now required to comply with state laws for reporting abuse and to cooperate fully with authorities. For the most part the stories once again generating news in the United States concern old cases and the previous negligence of bishops to deal effectively and justly with the crisis. New to the controversy has been the suggestion by some that the Pope himself bears responsibility for lapses.

by not mentioning the issue AND changing protocol to allow one of his boys refer to the allegations as "petty gossip." Many victims are not at all amused. Particularly those in Ireland.

Abuse protest at Easter Sunday mass
04/04/2010 - 13:32:15

Easter Sunday Mass at Dublin’s Pro Cathedral was briefly interrupted as protesters placed children’s shoes at the altar to represent the victims of clerical sex abuse.

Around five people walked to the steps of the altar where one man shouted “shame” at Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, who was celebrating the packed Mass.

Other protesters who mingled outside the city centre cathedral claimed they also tried to leave shoes but were prevented by gardaí.

Rachael Moran, from Dublin, said she was disgusted that so many people had attended the Mass in the wake of the abuse revelations.

“We’re just a collection of Irish people who’ve had enough,” she said.

“I am beyond disgusted that there are hundreds and hundreds of people in that church, it just really goes to show how warped the Irish mindset is.”

3. Right after they get rid of this Pope (and nearly all the Cardinals)
I won't hold my breath, however.

4. The Roman Catholic tragedy
On March 26, Quebec City Archbishop Marc Ouellet, primate of the Roman Catholic Church in Canada, accused members of the media of having "ulterior motives" in their attempts to link the Pope to the pedophilia scandals erupting once again.

Leaving aside whether the Pope did or did not know about several well-reported incidents, Ouellet's reflexive defence, repeated in virtually every chancery office, is expected and hardly surprising.

And here is the crux of the problem bedevilling the Roman Catholic Church today.

The late pontiff John Paul II was no fan of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). Coming from a church frozen in time, the Polish pope was an intransigent conservative who set out to remake the church according to his own lights. Unlike Gioacchino Pecci, Pope Leo XIII, who credited his long (1873-1903) and successful pontificate on his never "being afraid to appoint those who disagreed with me," John Paul II did the opposite, appointing only clones.

6. Marc Ouellet is considered a possible future Pope. I've heard his name before.
The theory goes that he could be a compromise candidate in the event of a hung conclave.

John Paul II completely changed the college of Cardinals. He stomped out any movement towards reform.

5. I think that it will eventually come to that
right after the "Catholic Church Bankruptcy" followed by the "Catholic Church Going Out of Business Sale" followed by the "New and Improved Reorganized Catholic Church" which will come out of Vatican III.

8. In screenwriting, the third act is the end, so yes, it is time to draw the curtain

this one would start with Jesus and end as a tragic farce of velvet robed bejeweled freaks claiming to represent him while screwing little boys. When their flock finally realizes how squalid they truly are, their churches will be empty, their coffers bare, and they will join the homeless, begging with cardboard signs that say anything except former priest since people would only pour insults and rotten food on them if they knew what they were.
