If any one thing could grow our nation out of this recession, it would be to help small and medium-size businesses create jobs. Yet Republicans just blocked a bill proposed by President Barack Obama and championed by economists to funnel $30 billion into regional banks so they can lend $300 billion to small businesses (“Republicans kill small-business lending bill,” Tribune, July 30).
How odd. Republicans usually favor spurring economic productivity through incentives such as this. Perhaps the right’s temper tantrum is because it wants Democrats to fail. Republicans justify their dissent by saying that America can’t spend money it doesn’t have.
But they approved non-existent money for the war in Iraq, and they continued to spend evaporated money after they reduced taxes on the wealthy.
