IRAN today banned all advertisements in the country for pets, pet shops, pet food and other pet products, claiming that people's love for their dogs and cats may lead to "evil outcomes".

The edict, announced by Iran's powerful Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, is based on a fatwa issued by Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi, 86, a hardliner who lives in Iran’s holy city of Qom. Declaring dogs in particular to be unclean under Sharia, he condemned Iranian dog owners for “blindly imitating the West” and warned that their infatuation would lead to “evil outcomes”, according to the state-run Mehr news agency.

“Many people in the West love their dogs more than their wives and children,” the Grand Ayatollah declared.

Owning pets, particularly dogs, has become increasingly popular in recent years among Iran’s wealthy urban elite, many of whom loathe the present regime. The police sometimes stop people for walking their dogs in parks and other public places.

Muhammad didn't like dogs according to Sunni tradition, and most practicing Muslims do not have dogs as pets. It is said that angels do not enter a house which contains a dog.

Meanwhile, one of the thriving businesses to be in is making pots and pans from aluminum blanks. Well, that's what it's supposed to be. Most of them are turning a huge profit making replacement satellite dishes so people who have had them confiscated by the religious militia can replace them before they miss any of their favorite shows.

That country has been overdue for another revolution as the government is held in the deepest contempt by the young majority. If governments in the west would just shut the hell up and stop threatening them, the remaining support for those madmen would crumble overnight. Lacking an outside enemy, they'd all realize the people have been the enemy all along and bye-bye mullahs.

Banning Fifi and Rover is just the latest in a long series of outrages the people there are sick and tired of.

Only the constant sabre rattling by the west is keeping that ridiculous government in power.

A large segment of the population has never lost their westernized views and have merely been waiting it out (if they didn't emigrate). Yes, our foreign policy is as ignorant and self-defeating now, as it was then when anyone who bothered to pay attention would have known trouble was brewing for the Shah (and thus the US).

Of course I jest. I was at the county fair today and there was an exhibit
of therapy donkeys. Miniature donkeys that go to local nursing homes. It's
a farming community and made great sense to me after I thought about it.

Yesterday I gave my dog a bath and spent over an hour brushing and blow-drying his fur.
