CBS poll: most believe amendment has no place in election

A CBS poll released on May 30 showed that 28 percent of Americans believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry; a result up slightly from previous polls.

The poll also indicated that 29 percent believe gays should be allowed to form civil unions, which suggests 57 percent support some form of legal status for same-sex couples.

While 60 percent of Americans back the constitutional amendment to ban marriage for gay couples, and 37 percent oppose it, 70 percent said that the issue of the amendment has no place in a presidential election campaign; 20 percent said it should play a “minor” role, and nine percent said it should have a “major” role.

2. that issue is SUCH an non-starter. I am just amazed that

it ever even comes up. Of course people should have protections to ensure their family is taken care of in case of illness.

By family I'm not talking about blood relatives either, most adult household's revolve around two unrelated people in an intimate relationship. Why would the gender of said adults matter in the least bit? I have never understood the hullaballoooooooo

... of talking points. They need something to rile up the fundies. No one wants to hear about and then pay for most of the crap they're selling. Gay marriage is sure to get the fundies chomping at the bit and opening the checkbook.

When you ask most persons "do you think gay persons should have the same rights of partnership that you have with your mate," the answer is usually "yes, of course." However, if you frame the discussion with "should gays have special rights" or gays getting married will destroy the good christian institution of marriage then that's when people go bananas.

Waaaaaa??? Damn it. I want high schools to start teaching government again so the 60% who are effing morons learn to leave the constitution the hell alone!

5. What ever happened to the separation of church and state????

I don't think it is right for anyone to have to get a license from the government to get married.......regardless. If your church will marry you, then you should be able to get married.....the government should stay out of it.
