The two leaders of the anti-teacher union education movement in America, at least at the local level, are Michelle Rhee and Joel Klein, the former school chiefs of Washington, DC and New York City. Surely you get the reason why education “reform” is so prized among elites when you see the placement of these two officials, right? Well, both of them have left their posts, Rhee because the mayor that hired her got beat in an election, and Klein because Rupert Murdoch wants to get into the education business :
News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch wants to focus on his A-B-Cs.
The media giant, parent of the Fox network, Fox News Channel, 20th Century Fox and the Wall Street Journal, wants to make a push into the education business and has tapped New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein to be the point person <...>
In a press conference, Klein said he’d been tapped by News Corp. to “put them in the burgeoning and dynamic education marketplace.”
“His record of achievement leading one of the country’s toughest school systems has given him a unique perspective that will be particularly important as we look into a sector that has long been in need of innovation,” said Murdoch in a statement.
If I read this right, Murdoch wants Klein to manage a bunch of Fox-owned for-profit charter schools, which would extract state and federal dollars for corporate interests based on dubious records of student achievement. Disney is already doing this, apparently, with a series of Disney-branded schools.
Who will replace Klein as school chancellor in New York? A media expat
