In choosing the oldest man ever to run the young state of California, voters decided that a grumpy penny-pincher is just what they need at a time when the state is so broke it cannot fix park benches or investigate burglaries.

Jerry Brown — welcome back! The man who eschewed the governor’s mansion to sleep on a mattress on his apartment floor when he ran California a long generation ago should feel right at home in the poorhouse of Sacramento 2010. Here’s what your outgoing governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, had to say while trying to keep the lights on and foreclosure buzzards at bay:

“Our wallet is empty. Our bank is closed. Our credit is dried up.”

The only thing not in short supply, it seems, is California schadenfreude. The Golden State has become the American France — everyone professes to despise it, but loves to go there.

1. California is still the eighth largest economy in the world

and any Governor who doesn't know how to tap into that resource (the Governator didn't know) is not a savvy politician or administrator. I am confident Jerry will know what to do. I hope we can keep him for two terms.

2. The governator had zero political acumen. Jerry will outshine him there. If anyone can do it

he can.

4. Me too! Brown's biggest challenge (obviously) will be in attracting Business --

-- and Industry to this great state and seeing that it REMAINS here.

This will expand the tax base and greatly increase employment.

5. If the Legislature passes single payer health care again and he doesn't veto it like

Arnold has, it will be one of the important factors in bringing back a lot of business to California, in particular the movie and TV business, much of which we lost to Canada and New Zealand because of our expensive health care. But relieving busineses of that burden of providing health insurance to their employees should stimulate new businesses that are manufacturing stuff like maybe solar panels to move here to take advantage of the health care factor. It will also help other businesses that are still operating here.
