It's the Media, Stupid
It's the Media, Stupid
August 11, 2003
By Robert Weiner

Have the Democrats learned the hard lessons of 2002?

Democrats don't like being in the minority. But what happened in 2002—the Republican upsurge and control in the last weeks of the election—will happen again if Democrats don't get their messages out. The problem is not that they don't stand for anything; it's that they are not using the media effectively in presenting their stance. Without a strong nationwide ad campaign for 2004, Democrats can forget about taking back Congress and the White House.

1. The California recall will be a media preview of 2004
If the Democrats can't get their message out through a hostile media in California, it's doubtful they will be able to do any better during the 2004 campaign.

2. did anyone tell Weiner about black box voting?
Where's the link to those odds that one of us worked out. I'll send him a letter if someone can help me locate that link.

Which is not to say he doesn't have a point. My problem with this is that we've now taken politics into the age of mass marketing, PR, merchandising strategy ("you don't roll out a new product in August") whirligigs, geegaws and bells and whistles. That's what Adweek and advertising is all about.

I would much rather see truth, as Gore talked about in his recent speech.

3. Hard to do
when the media is owned by right-wingers. That's when you use alternative sources for your news, like the Internet. I think that a grass-roots campaign, with meetups where people get together, is the best way to go.

4. He's looking for work
But that is not to say he's wrong.

His massive national drug policy campaign for Drug Tzar Killer McCaffrey was a complete failure (naturally) but profits are profits.

He's a hack but he's right. That is why advertisers get paid the big bucks. It works (sometimes).

5. it may be the media but we can influence it
think about it folks.

in the middle of the 9-11 events, with a corrupt administration, whoring media, and people to afraid to speak out - at least 50% of the population is buying the media propaganda crap. These 50% should clearly boycott any media that is right-wing and sponsor accurate reporting outlets instead. How long before better programs emerge?

50% of the people is a lot of economic and political clout.
