WASHINGTON -- It's no wonder that President Bush (news - web sites) does not read many books. Beginning with the works of his former treasury secretary, Paul O'Neill, and anti-terrorism director, Richard Clarke, Bush has taken the worst hard-cover pounding I've ever seen. The only writer who seems to have sympathy for him is his predecessor, Bill Clinton (news - web sites).
Now that old favorite, "Anonymous," is about to hit the shelves of a store near you with a book called "Imperial Hubris: Why the West Is Losing the War on Terrorism." Although that book has not yet come out, interviews with the author are already appearing in newspapers, beginning with The New York Times last Wednesday, and on radio as well.
"Anonymous" became "Mike" in an interview on National Public Radio and then identified himself as a CIA (news - web sites) agent for the past 22 years -- and added that he is still working at the agency. He is, in fact, known by many in Washington, and I'm sure his literary cover will be blown sooner rather than later. Like O'Neill and Clarke, Mike is speaking some uncomfortable realities about the world and American policy today -- and part of the story is why he is doing it or being allowed to do it.
