In the section dealing with precautions that all travelers should take, she included the following statement: “Always use latex condoms to reduce the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.” I later checked other tourist guides published in the West and found most of them to have a similar advice.

This statement is truly fascinating because it indicates an assumption by Westerners that anyone visiting a country will naturally have sex with one of its inhabitants or a fellow tourist.

Think about that for a moment.

...Their suffering was ameliorated, however, when a clever soldier put on women’s pantyhose. Suddenly, all over Iraq, American soldiers were buying any pantyhose they could lay their hands on.

The Iraqis observed this with bemusement and growing disdain.

apparently it ameliorates chafing due to the heat and the nature of the (combat) uniforms.

Since I've never worn pantyhose, much less in 100+ heat and with combat fatigues, I can't speak for hte validity of that.

I under about the clothing. I could not understand, when I lived in Saudi, why Westerns did not understand about the clothing these people wore. To have to cover up in boiling sun and be in very few clothing under was much cooler then tight pants and shirt and the sun all over your skin. Plus they have lived there for about 7000 years and should know how to dress. Even as kids in the 30's and 40's we all had large cotton robes we wore to beach so the sun would not burn us. No, one did not swim in them as Saudi women must.

But I've seen reports of some sort of burrowing insect that gives you a lesion for months. Perhaps it is to keep those little buggers off your legs.

6. Pantyhose.

Helps reduce blisters in the boots and heat rashes on the legs. When you are carrying stuff in your cargo pockets that added weight rubs on your thigh. In an intense heat situation it can be aggravating.

7. First, what do men do about their hairy legs getting stuck in the panty

hose and itching like crazy, and second what about their "aparatus." We have to pull them down to deal with bodily functions, what do the guys do? Would think that panty hose would be really uncomfortable since they would squish parts that need to be free?

This is so strange. And, the damn things are so hot in the Summer most of us don't wear them, in the Southern parts of the country.

I could have shortened this by using some other words but am trying to keep it clinical. :D

11. Pantyhose wearing and men

I remember a few years ago reading an interview with William Shatner about the filming of Star Trek: Generations. Shatner specifically mentioned that he wore pantyhose under his clothes when riding to cut down on the chafing. At the time Shatner owned several Paso Finos and had learned the pantyhose trick from professional riders.
