Farenheit -911 One longs for greatness in cinema today if just for the preservation of the health of this most precious and delicate of art forms. Michael Moore’s recent film “Farenheit 911” falls so short of its hype that the result may be disastrous to the anti-war movement. As cinema goes so does our civilization.

Farenheit begins with the theft of the Presidential election in 2000. Then Moore runs credits. Then he establishes the greed of the Bush clan with video snippets of them that establishes their station.

Then he switches to his propaganda campaign about 9/11. He asserts repeatedly that there were hijackers, 15 of whom are Saudi. Moore’s boldness is faux. Yes, he’s hinting that the Bush Regime was in contact with elites in Saudi Arabia that sponsored the Saudi hijackers. However, by confirming the existence of and continuously legitimizing Al Qaeda generally he cedes the means of control the Bush Regime has over the anti-war movement. This central flaw in Farenheit comes at this crucial juncture in history. Meanwhile, the mass hysteria over Farenheit among the anti-war movement is drowning out legitimate criticism of it.

Moore follows his 9/11 propaganda segment with a very strong anti-war section for the last hour. The most memorable parts of this section include graphic footage of Iraqis just after their loved ones have been killed.

Unfortunately, the anti-war commentary at the end doesn't make up for Moore elevating Al Qaeda’s stature as a means to terrify the US public. In time those graphic images near the end which move the anti-war movement will disappear from people's minds. However, the White House can continue to push the “Al Qaeda beheading button” whenever it needs a new topic for the corporate media’s front page. Moore has empowered them to do this.

Many people understand our democracy is rapidly nearing its end. (Before they snatch me away I'd like to say that the Ferris Wheel sequence in the classic movie "The Third Man" remains majestic.) Sadly, Michael Moore's "Farenheit 911" fails to improve the future prospects for cinema-goers everywhere.

4. the point is..
His point is that Moore doesn't question the legitimacy of AlQaeda as an essentially independent terrorist organization without CIA infiltration. Therefore he cedes unwittingly or not to the Bush administration's continued ploy of elevating AlQaeda to a threatening worldwide terrorist organization,a direct threat to the US and one that we therefore need to spend hundreds of billions of dollars fighting against. The author sees AlQaeda as essentially bogus and as an operation of the CIA. I do too.

6. The people are not ready for such a concept
and Moore's film would be hurt if he put forward such an idea without absolute proof. Such proof does not exist.

7. That's true
That's true. But there is really no proof the other way either is there? So Moore opts for the safe option. Of course. And with Kerry we go nowhere in challenging this CIA domain. What changes?

Talk about nitpicky! "Ooo, my favorite theory wasn't mentioned, that means he's a coward! A sellout! A lout!"

9. re:"theory"
His favorite "theory" was mentioned at the exclusion of all others. By essentially embracing the standard explanation he intentionally closes the door on other less acceptable options..I don't think that qualifies as "nitpicky"... but rather something more in the area of "profound".

15. Moore and some of us hope "mainstream" uneducated about Bush America
Edited on Tue Jun-29-04 02:48 PM by KoKo01
will see this movie. You can't go around trying to get these folks to see that Srub is callow and works for the "Corporation" by telling them that Osama works for the CIA...

Give me a break. Moore made a movie that would hopefully give us who know the "whole deal" some backup support and hopefully pull in the "Reality TV" crowd and the Fox/CNN/MSNBC viewers. But, Loughrey thinks he isn't being "pure enough?"

I was an anti-Iraq Invasion Protestor. I thought Moore's movie was great because it showed the effect of this war on the PEOPLE of both countries...which is why I protested this Invasion. It was wrong, based on lies and would hurt the PEOPLE in both countries.

I didn't think he missed that in his review. You need a show like "Frontline" on PBS to expose the darker theories behind all this. Moore's film is just trying to wake folks up that Bush isn't just a "charming fool" he's dangerous and run by some folks who are using our country to increase their profits and political ambitions.

11. That is what I thought.
Michael Moore is one of the few voices being heard at the moment; although most of us know he doesn't scratch the surface of the evil that is the BFEE. He's a patriot. Its kinda important that he be alive in order to be heard.

13. Like the war on drugs, the war on terror is a means to give money to the
wealthy power elite. It is a hustle or scam game. You convince enough people they are in danger and they will let you do anything.

We are going in debt to fight a bogey man, the Islamic extremist, AlQaeda and not spending a dime on domestic problems. The tax money we all pay is not going to programs we need but into the pockets of the owners of Haliburton and most of us don't give a damn because we are convinced that AlQueda will strike again and maybe kill us.

If you take the billions spent on the "war on terror" and divide it by the number of people killed on 9/11 (150 x 1000 million / 3300) is about $45.5 million per person. And are we any safer today? I think we are as safe today as we were on 9/10.

5. Interesting
I guess the author feels that the Bushies MIHOP-- a possibility I won't deny.

My criticism of the movie-- which I generally found excellent--is that it didn't do enough to highlight the complicity of many Democrats--including Kerry- with the war and the Patriot Act. I guess Moore is just focused on getting the current usurpers out of there.

But the awesome"won't get fooled again" ending echoes, uncomfortably, as I remember the line in the "Who" song--

"Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss."
