Jeremy Scahill on Killing of Bin Laden: Obama Has “Doubled Down on Bush Administration Policy of Targeted Assassination”

The manhunt for Osama bin Laden is over. Nearly 10 years after the attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, U.S. forces are said to have assassinated the Saudi-born founder of al-Qaeda inside Pakistan. The U.S. operation was reportedly carried out by 25 Navy Seals under the command of the Joint Special Operations Command. At the time of his death, bin Laden was reportedly living in a heavily fortified mansion just a mile from the Pakistani army’s principal military academy. We speak with Jeremy Scahill, the national security correspondent for The Nation magazine, who has followed the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts closely as well as reported on the covert war inside Pakistan.

1. Or, he could use this achievement as political capital to extricate us from Bush's adventures
the door could swing either way. I hope we will use this event to get out of Afghanistan more quickly with a sense of completion. Do we want to be hopeful or do we want to prejudge the outcome as inevitably bad?

6. "If" can be the longest word.
I would love to end these wars and focus on domestic problems, but I read a few months back that Afghanistan holds a treasure in minerals to the tune of $40 trillion. Does anyone thinks neo-con corporate bots will let this opportunity pass?

2. The "Bush policy" was focused mostly on killing Saddam and nation building in Iraq.
Obama doubled down on Afghanistan and getting OBL.. both of which Bush ignored.

4. Yeah, but the whole world knew Osama was in Pakistan, not in Afghanistan.
Osama has been there since Tora Bora.

7. Yeah, and they were there before we got there and they will be there long after we are gone.
What a total waste of human lives and money.
