David Cameron's efforts to play down his upper-class credentials have taken an embarrassing knock - from a member of his own family.
The Prime Minister's uncle has said he should not be embarrassed by his well-heeled upbringing - and that most of us would prefer to be governed by a member of the aristocracy.
Sir William Dugdale - who is married to Mr Cameron's maternal aunt - also defended Mr Cameron's membership of the elite Bullingdon Club during his undergraduate days at Oxford.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph at the launch of his autobiography, Sir William, 89, said: 'If you ask the working classes who they want to lead them, they prefer to be led by a duke.
'I know it's an unpopular thing to say these days, however I have learnt this from my own experience.'
