The 10 Truest Things Harry Truman Said About Republicans
http://www.firedupmissouri.com/editorials/10-truest-things-harry-truman-said-about-republicans

#10. “The Republicans … will try to make people believe that everything the Government has done for the country is socialism. They will go to the people and say: "Did you see that social security check you received the other day—you thought that was good for you, didn't you? That's just too bad! That's nothing in the world but socialism. Did you see that new flood control dam the Government is building over there for the protection of your property? Sorry—that's awful socialism! That new hospital that they are building is socialism. Price supports, more socialism for the farmers! Minimum wage laws? Socialism for labor! Socialism is bad for you, my friend. Everybody knows that. And here you are, with your new car, and your home, and better opportunities for the kids, and a television set—you are just surrounded by socialism! Now the Republicans say, ‘That's a terrible thing, my friend, and the only way out of this sinkhole of socialism is to vote for the Republican ticket.’"

-- Harry Truman, 1947

Nine more great quotes at the link.

3. This is a bit deep.

But in the world there are some things, a few of them, with some power, but not unlimited power.

They need authoritarian structures and blind followship to hurt people. Or to do what ever they want.

The fact that most people are more good then bad, makes it hard for them if many people work for better society as a group.

The problems with socialism occur when the people making decisions in that system get taken over like some psychopathic CEO, or public leader is taken over, without heart and reason. Note many CEOs have heart and reason and help much of society, as do many leaders in government.

And that is a tough struggle, the more influence you have, the more they try to break you to hurt people.

Why breaking up consolidations helps everyone also. If one person can not do much damage, the limited powers that do not believe in free will, can not do as much damage. And they are limited, and they don't have very many people they can delude into doing much harm, so they have to have authoritarian structures. And get the people without heart and thinking at the top of those structures, or following them.

Why democracies make better societies for most, but not for a few.

And socialism works if you can keep the top from being told to hurt many people. And that is done by systems of transparency where the many that are more good then bad, don't put up with that.

So the discussion is only part socialism, only part about having governance, but also about better governance for many people.

Any governance if not transparent, and not for the people, can be deluded into harming people. And that includes private sector systems, since they are a form of governance also.

I need to take the kid back up to the library. It's not that far and she's old enough to appreciate it a bit more.

8. Love Truman, even if I wasn't currently residing in MO.
I love to read about him, love to visit the sites.

So many things in Missouri make me feel ashamed to live here. Truman makes me proud to live here.

17. No, we only had time for the Library before we were back on the road.
But my husband and I both wished that we had set aside more time. I was very young when Harry was President. My parents were staunch supporters and he actually visited my home town in MT in the early 50s via train. It was a really big deal, as I recall. That was when Presidents really knew what the country was like from coast to coast because they actually travelled through the heartland.

We still have home movies of Harry's visit, although we converted them from the original film (whatever mm it was).

27. Thanks for the suggestion. We really enjoyed our X-country driving tour.
It was something that we had wanted to do for many years. 2008 was the first time when we were both retired and were able to do it. We used the opportunity of a reunion in Sacramento to drive from MD to CA and returned by a different route. We also visited family and friends along the way. We saw sights we had never seen before and revisited others we had known and loved. The previous September (2007), we had taken a shorter road trip in the fall, driving from MD to MS for the 50th wedding anniversary of some dear friends, returning via LA, where we stayed in the French Quarter of New Orleans and toured the some of the areas devastated by Katrina, then returned via TN, KY and the Shenandoah Parkway.

I wish that everyone - and especially our politicians - could really travel through the USA this way, at least once. It is an immense country and needs on occasion to be viewed close up - not just from 35,000 feet or higher or from the interstates. The local people need to be talked to and interacted with for one to really get a sense of what's going on. It also makes one realize how we too easily let ourselves stereotype groups or regions, when we should not. There are good and helpful people everywhere, just as the loonies can be found everywhere.

19. I wish he and FDR had gotten universal health care passed
They were working on it, but the plan failed for various reasons (the GOP takeover of congress, southern dems opposed to racial integration in hospitals and blood supplies, etc).

But back then medical care was only 3-4% of GDP, there was no insurance industry and no pharma industry to bring down any reforms.

At least we got medicare/medicaid in the 60s, but it would've been better if we'd gotten medicare for all in the 40s.

23. I wish it had happened too.
We wouldn't be going through this nonsense now.

I take that back-some greedy SOB would still be griping about it but the majority of the population would be quite happy with the deal.

26. I think it's a great library because
it was so personal to the Truman family. They came up with the idea and they put it all together.

28. Sadly, I can imagine how corporate Dems in DC would modify everyone of these
Especially:

#6. ''A leader in the Democratic Party is a boss, in the Republican Party he is a leader. That's why we must fire anyone the Republicans criticize in any way.''

#7. ''Let them bring the battle to you. Always be on the defensive, let them frame the issues, and apologize for everything, especially if it did any good for middle class, working class, or poor people.''

#8. ''When a fellow tells me he's bipartisan, I know that means there's enough bribes for me too if I play ball.''
